What exactly is cognitive neuroscience?
Neuroscience is a broad scientific field that encompasses several disciplines studying the brain, the nervous system, and their influence on our behavior.

Cognitive neuroscience focuses specifically on cognitive processes: perception, attention, language, memory, consciousness, and learning. It seeks to understand how the human brain processes information and performs its functions, transforming an experience into knowledge or an automatic response.
This field draws on several disciplines: biology, psychology, and sometimes neuropsychology, and relies on a variety of research methods, including behavioral observation and brain imaging.

For a long time, research viewed the adult brain as static. Advances in recent decades have gradually shown that it retains its ability to adapt at any age. I have closely followed this evolution in our understanding, and it is this evolution that, year after year, has laid the foundation for my Mental Reset method.

Which cognitive functions am I working on with you?
In my coaching work, four functions come up particularly often when it comes to understanding an automatic response and taking action on it—not just describing it.
Perception
Your nervous system assesses whether a situation is safe or threatening before you even have a chance to think about it. This is often the root cause of an overreaction to an email or a harmless comment.
Attention
Under heavy mental strain, attention narrows and prioritizes urgency at the expense of what’s essential. This is a pattern I see very often among overworked executives.
Memory
Every significant experience leaves a mark that influences your current reactions, sometimes even years later. During a session, we trace it back to its source to defuse it.
Language

For a long time, it was believed that the brain remained static once adulthood was reached. Today, cognitive neuroscience shows that the brain retains the ability to create and strengthen new connections throughout life: neuroplasticity.
Every repeated behavior strengthens the connections between the neurons involved. Imagine a route you take every day: a different path requires attention at first, but then becomes second nature through repetition. Your brain works the same way—a central principle of human cognition.
After a tough day, the craving for a square of chocolate isn’t always linked to actual hunger: your brain has associated that moment with a feeling of comfort, over and over again, until it becomes automatic. For leaders, this same principle explains why certain reactions under pressure remain the same: the brain favors what it already knows, because it requires less energy.
Understanding how it works is an essential step. However, this is not always enough to bring about lasting behavioral change, because every automatic response results from the interaction of several factors: emotions, beliefs, the nervous system, and past experiences.
