Anxious Attachment Style: Signs, Causes and How to Break Free
You saw it coming. And yet, here you are again.
Same pattern, different person. Same fear, different context.
Understanding isn’t enough, and you already know that.
Why is it so hard to change, even when you can clearly see what’s going on?
What is anxious attachment style?
Understanding our experiences and the mechanisms that influence our relationships.
Patterns that develop very early on
Anxious attachment style is when your emotional well-being depends on another person: their mood, their presence, or the constant need for validation. This pattern affects both men and women of all ages in all kinds of relationships: romantic, friendly, family, or work-related.
A relational pattern formed in childhood
The behaviors of a person with anxious attachment develop as early as childhood, in environments where the child did not feel accepted and/or did not receive the love they expected.
Even when a situation causes us pain, it may unconsciously feel familiar to us. That’s why some people find themselves in the same patterns in love, friendship, family, or at work.
In anxious attachment, the absence of the other person causes intense anxiety, which can sometimes be physical. The bond with the partner functions like an addiction, with tolerance, withdrawal, and relapse.
Key point: Anxious attachment style is not a personality disorder. It is a constructed relational pattern that can change.
What are the signs of anxious attachment?
You might recognize yourself in these situations:
- You need to be reassured on a regular basis.
- Do you have trouble saying no or setting boundaries?
- You tend to constantly adapt to other people's expectations.
- You're afraid of disappointing others, of being rejected, or of being abandoned.
- You know that a situation no longer works for you… but you're having a hard time letting go of it.
- Inability to Leave Even when you know it's toxic, something keeps you there.
If several of these situations sound familiar to you, you may be experiencing anxious attachment or codependency in your relationships.

What are the causes of anxious attachment and codependency?
You have courage and clarity, but why do these same patterns keep repeating themselves, over and over again?
Anxious attachment develops very early on, often during childhood, in environments where love seemed conditional. These experiences create deep-seated relational patterns that cannot be undone simply through understanding.
When your current relationships resemble those from your past, even if they’re painful or difficult, your subconscious perceives a reassuring sense of familiarity. It is this familiarity that draws you in, despite the suffering. Anxious attachment can also overlap with codependency, particularly when the need for the other person becomes the organising principle of your daily life.
It’s entirely possible to recognize that a situation no longer suits you, to sincerely want to change, and yet to fall back into the same repetitive patterns with a partner, a coworker, a supervisor, or a loved one. Willpower alone isn’t enough when these patterns are rooted much deeper than in your conscious mind.
How anxious attachment affects your relationships and daily life
Emotional exhaustion
Managing another person’s moods, anticipating them, and reading between the lines requires a great deal of energy on a daily basis.
Crumbling self-confidence
By constantly seeking validation from others, your own opinion loses its power, which in turn reinforces your anxious attachment pattern.
Repetitive Relationship Patterns
Anxiety and Rumination
Intrusive thoughts about what others think keep running through your mind. Anxiety creeps in during moments of relaxation and disrupts your sleep.
Impact on Work
Anxious attachment at work manifests as an excessive need for validation or an inability to assert yourself with superiors or colleagues.
Codependency and feeling of emptiness
These patterns often impact self-confidence and fuel anxiety. Both can be worked on directly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS -
Do you have any questions?
How long does it take to overcome anxious attachment?
There is no single answer — it depends on how long the pattern has been present and how deeply rooted it is. Many clients notice a significant shift after the first session. A complete transformation of relational patterns generally takes between 40 days and 3 months.
What is the difference between anxious attachment and codependency?
Anxious attachment describes a relational pattern rooted in fear of abandonment and a need for constant reassurance. Codependency goes a step further — it is when your sense of identity and emotional stability becomes entirely organised around another person. The two often overlap, and both can be worked on through Mental Reset Coaching.
Will I forget that person if I cut ties with them?
No. The goal is not to erase the relationship but to free yourself from the emotional hold it has over you — keeping what was meaningful while releasing what is keeping you stuck.
How do you cut ties with someone you love?
Cutting ties is rarely about the other person. It is about reclaiming your own emotional space. In coaching, we work on the attachment pattern itself — not just the relationship — so the change is lasting.
Does it work remotely?
Yes. All sessions take place online via Zoom or WhatsApp. Distance does not affect the depth of the work. Clients across Ireland, the UK, and internationally have experienced lasting results.
How many sessions are required?
It depends on your situation and goals. A single session can produce measurable results on a specific issue. For deeper relational patterns — anxious attachment or codependency — the 3-session program over 40 days is recommended.
